  • Race, Riots and Reports - by Shamim Miah
The summer riots affecting the northern mill towns of Oldham, Burnley and Bradford, involved more than 15,000 people and cost over £12m in damages. Since then the much-awaited reports have been published, exploring the causes of what they refer to as the summer ‘disturbances’ and not the summer ‘riots’ - the difference between the two having more to do with compensation claims than semantics.

  • Caged With The Bull - by Farzanna Khan
At the time of going to press, 158 alleged Taliban and Al-Qaeda fighters were being detained at the now infamously titled ‘Camp X-Ray’, in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. This bullish action of the US has sparked an international furore over the treatment of the prisoners and has exposed the American administration’s hypocrisy and double standards.

  • Men For No Season: British, Muslim and Human -
    by Dr Abdelwahab El-Affendi

Events of 11 September should not intimidate Muslims in Britain from holding fast to the moral and spiritual agenda of their faith. Actually it should be the inspiration to cultivate a culture of peaceful civil dissent and active engagement of co-existing in a plural society

  • Missing Peace In The Jigsaw - by Farzanna Khan
The anti-war movement has brought together some unlikely bedfellows. At the last mass rally in London, elderly bearded Kashmiri men marched alongside social anarchists. Farzanna Khan looks at one organisation that is determined to become the missing piece in the anti-war jigsaw by uniting Muslims and oppositional political groups.

  • Schools Of Good Faith - by Ibrahim Hewitt
Did you know that one of the root causes of the September 11 atrocities and the summer’s riots in northern England was the existence of faith schools in Britain? You didn’t? Well, neither did I, but opponents of such schools have, quite shamelessly, used those events as a platform from which to attack Christian, Jewish and Muslim schools. Believe the propaganda and you too will agree that it is in such places that the seeds for the disintegration of our society are nurtured.

  • Anti-Terrorism Laws: An Attack On Civil Liberties -
    by Abdul-Rehman Malik

The draconian laws being introduced in North America in the name of combatting terrorism are an outright attack on civil liberties. Dissident voices are being silenced and freedom of speech is being effectively outlawed. If the Muslim world has been notorious for its intolerance of different opinions, it is fast being replaced by the narrow-mindedness of the West.

  • American Muslim Charities: A Sacrificial Lamb For Israel -
    by Riad Z Abdelkarim

On Tuesday 4 December 2001, the US government effectively declared war on Islam and Muslims in America. President George Bush accused the country's largest Muslim charity - the Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development - of funding Hamas and supporting terrorism. This witch-hunt of Muslim organisations is not a precautionary measure in the war against terrorism - it is a nationwide smear campaign to undermine Muslims and the institutions that serve them.

  • Daniel Pipes: Knowing The Enemy - by Shadee Elmasry
In the post September 11th world, there has been much compassion and outreach towards Muslims but there has also been a heightened campaign against Islam led by notorious Islamophobes. One such leader is Daniel Pipes. What he and his cohorts are doing is no less than a character assassination of the mainstream Muslim community in America. We need to be aware of the agenda and techniques of such people because they no longer threaten just a fringe few they pose a danger to the average Muslim in America.

  • Pain and Patriotism: Beyond The Stars and Stripes -
    by Abdul-Rehman Malik

New York city has masked its pain behind a garish display of patriotism. This may be the only way Americans know how to deal with such an immense tragedy but Abdul-Rehman Malik wonders when they will look beyond the stripes and stars and come to terms with what really happened.

  • Letters From My Cousin: John Walker -
    by Musa Abdun Nur Maguire

The story of John Walker, the American Muslim who fought with the Taliban, has been repeatedly cited as evidence of Muslim ‘traitors’ in the West. Walker also known as Sulayman Lindh is currently on trial for conspiring to kill fellow Americans in Afghanistan. His cousin, Musa Abdun Nur Maguire shares some previously unpublished letters with Q-News and explains why he believes Walker deserves the support of the Muslim community.

  • The Lethal Pretzel: Weapon of Mass Destruction -
    by Abie Dawjee

Terrorist experts concurred that the samosa is perhaps far more dangerous than the pretzel because it has three very pointy ends that could do a great deal of damage if swallowed quickly.

  • Yvonne Ridley: Lifting The Western Veil
Yvonne Ridley, the Sunday Express journalist who was captured by the Taliban, is the not the woman she used to be. When she set out for Afghanistan in September 2001 she was ready to expose the atrocities committed by what many have described as the world’s most brutal regime. As a western journalist she saw herself as a champion for the rights of burka-clad Afghan women oppressed by the strictures of Islam. But to the disappointment of the world media, Yvonne Ridley returned safe and sound, with nothing but words of sympathy and respect for her captors. She betrayed the awaiting headlines and told a story that not many were willing to hear. Below, she tells Q-News about her experience in Afghanistan, her understanding of Muslim women and how in the hands of the Taliban, a whole new world opened up for her.

  • Social Darwinism: The Origins of Terrorism - by Harun Yahya
In the aftermath of the September 11 terrorist attacks on targets in New York and Washington, the question regarding the real origin of terrorism has started to occupy minds once again. This is a very important topic that demands a multi-dimensional examination. For a viable struggle with terrorism, it is essential to make an exact determination of the origin of this ideology.

  • Terrorism As Cannibalism - by Vandana Shiva
Year 2001 will be etched in our memory as a year in which the vicious cycle of violence was unleashed worldwide. Of the Taliban bombing the two thousand year old images of peace, the Buddhas of Bamiyan. Of terrorists blowing up the WTC on September 11. Of a global alliance bombing out what remained of Afghanistan after two decades of super power rivalry and civil war. Of Pakistan and India threatening to go to war as 2001 gave way to 2002.

  • The Ultimate Conquest - by Ahmad Thomson
It is relatively simple to condemn the September 11th bombings and the invasion of Afghanistan, but not so easy to look deeper. There is no shortage of misinformation and speculation in the media and as always, the official version is at odds with what is beneath the surface. But neither the surface nor the depths are particularly clear when in the midst of a storm - nor when looking back at it.

  • Conceiving A Baby: Towards a healthy ummah -
    by Jasmin Izagaren

Planning a baby should be a time of genuine excitement for all couples but whilst copious amounts of time may be devoted to the premarital ideals of parenthood, seldom few actually give much thought to this responsibility until the child has already arrived - or in some cases, when the moment comes to conceive and nothing happens. I share a strong belief with a growing number of people that a great deal of preparation needs to be exercised in preconceptual care preparation that extends beyond the superficial desires that prevail in our consumer-oriented society.

  • Book Review: ‘From Utah to Eternity: A Mormon-Muslim Journey’ - by Fozia Bora
Nigel Algar's tribute to his son

  • Film Review: The Lord of the Rings - by Afsana Khan
The analogies with much of what we believe as Muslims, cannot go unnoticed by even the most un-elightened of Muslim minds. Tolkien’s classic is layered with symbolism, much of it relating to the nafs and the essential nature of human beings. Man’s ability to conquer the evil within himself and reach the level of angels is starkly juxtaposed with his tendency to surrender to his lower self and fall to the depths of savage creatures. Our innate desire to prefer good over evil and light over darkness becomes vividly apparent and is perhaps an important reminder in an age that arrogantly denies the existence of such basic, universal truths. Indeed the tale is so loaded with awesome realities that when leaving the cinema it feels as though the world depicted in the three hour movie is closer to reality than the everyday world to which we are compelled to return.
